Just as today begins a new year, so today brings a new world for our friends in Wandering Fortunes with Chapter 21: A Fresh Start. They’ve fled their old home planet of Zhop to escape the mafia-infested planet-wide military, and they’ve arrived at the planet Derantu. But before they enter their new home proper they have to pass through Salenth Kingdom customs, and it’ll be up to them to prevent Top from ruining everything.
Also, either today or tomorrow I plan to post a 2018 retrospective like I did a year ago for 2017. It’ll include a look back, how I’ve failed (and maybe even succeeded), and what I hope to do this year. Watch for that. (And of course, a new Odemon will go up today. If you didn’t notice I took last week off and did an Odemon year retrospective on Mastodon and Twitter.
With a thunk, metal bars blocked the shop’s exit. There was no way to leave.
“Hey, what’s with the lockdown?” Sonic the Hedgehog asked.
“Sonic, you can’t just take my merchandise, even if you are a hero,” the shopkeep said. “That golden egg is very rare, you’ll have to purchase it.”
“Hey, what do I look like, I’m made of money?”
“Don’t you go around collecting rings?”
“YOU’RE NOT HAVING ANY OF MY RINGS!”
“No money, no egg.”
“Oh, fine.” Sonic tossed the egg back on the pedestal, and the metal bars retracted. Sonic ran out of the store to go save the world or something.
A Happiny skipped into the shop, so short the shopkeep didn’t even noticed. It dropped the gold egg into its pouch, placed its white stone on the pedestal, and then left the shop as if this were a perfectly normal and not at all illegal thing to do.

Chapter 7 of Wandering Fortunes is now up. The Obsidian City, New Zhopolis, finally appears! Big city! Tall buildings! Dim lights! Innumerable residents! Numerable but still a pretty high number of species! Subways, districts, roads, vehicles, orators, scam artists, grumps, racism, and jerks, jerks, jerks!
Wait, somewhere along the line that took a turn for the worse. Will the big city turn out to be all that it promises to be? Or will it turn out to be more than that and it turned out we just didn’t hear its promises right the first time?
As always, I post these chapters early for $3+ patrons on Patreon, so this chapter has been available for a couple weeks now and patrons will be able to see more of Alden and his friends’ adventures in The Big City in just a couple weeks. Even if you give just one dollar though you still get to see things early, as I post weekly updates that include a snippet of work much further ahead. You can take a look at a bit of chapter ten already!
