Patreon changes and pre-order notes

It turns out to make pre-ordering a thing with a Createspace-self-published book requires hoops. As it stands, when setting up the book information you can select a publication date, but you can’t select a publication date in the future. When I saw that, the first thing that came to mind is that someone has a planned publication date, they can enter in their date, and once it’s approved pre-ordering can begin. Nothing of the sort! That’s just there if the book was published in the past, I guess? I dunno. And of course once a book’s proof is approved, once the author says “yes, everything looks fine, the book is in place and set up right”, that’s equivalent to saying “sell the book NOW”.

So, to summarize, no pre-orders. Also, I can’t actually order non-proof copies of the book before approving it, so pre-ordering it by pledging on my Patreon won’t really get it any faster either. So that’s kind of a dead end there, no pre-ordering for the physical book, and for the ebook only pre-ordering through my Patreon.

Speaking of Patreon, I’ve done some changes. (Actually as of my typing this I have made no changes, but I’m partly using this to organize my thoughts while I change it). One of these days I should change that intro video to just be my voice with some images, no one wants to stare at me for a few minutes.

I’ve done a bit of editing on the about page, but it’s nothing too major. I might have changed one word on the milestones. What I’m really changing are the rewards. The $12 reward was originally for a signed book, but that has been changed to an unsigned one. There’s a new reward of $15 for a signed book. Why?

A signed book nearly doubles the cost to me, because first I have to ship it to me, sign it, then ship it out, so I pay for shipping twice. Cost analysis: as a creator, ordering a copy of Slubes only costs me $4.61, with $3.59 for shipping. Thus, if I ship it directly to someone this way, it costs $8.20. This is slightly lowered when I order them to my place because I’ll get 10 or so at once; since shipping doesn’t go up the same amount per book, it’ll result in something resembling $6 per book. Then I sign it, and from what the USPS website says the cost of shipping the book to someone becomes $6.45, so that comes to about $12 or so. The cost of signing the book is about $4 (not counting the ink used, and I kind of have a box of 50 pens I got for free due to Amazon free shipping shenaginags so whatever).

For the record, and I don’t think I mentioned this yet and probably should have, the new edition of Slubes will have a price of $12. I don’t give a fig for this $#.99 nonsense. Psychological pricing, pfft. Also while looking up the name of that I came across the Official Monster Raving Loony Party. Hats off to the UK. Not that I’m wearing a hat. In my case it might be hair off. Not for another month or so. Where was I? Oh, right.

$12 for Slubes normally, minus whatever percentage off Amazon might do at any given moment, plus shipping unless you have some membership with something or spend another $23 or so. $12 pledge on Patreon for a copy with no shipping cost, and $15 pledge for a signed copy with no shipping cost. Ebooks, meanwhile, are $1 regardless of Patreon or directly on Smashwords. And I don’t think I can sign ebooks…

That’s about it for this informationativel update. More fun stuff later!

Announcements of Editing, Serials, and Patreon!

I mentioned around the middle of June that I was planning some big changes, and here they are!

If you’re like me and prefer to read than watch someone yap about it, here it all is in text form:

Slubes Availability, Editing

The first change is my first novel, Slubes, will no longer be available through Createspace and Amazon.com. I’m sure you’ve heard about Amazon using jerk tactics to get better deals from companies that inevitably hurt writers. So I’ve been looking around for somewhere better. I’m considering Lulu.com, though I haven’t totally decided yet. However, in the meantime, Slubes is getting a makeover. I’m getting a professional editor to help me make Slubes, well, better. Wait, no. Amazing! I currently have no estimate for completion of that.

During this time, Slubes will still be available as an e-book on Smashwords, though, of course, it’s the old edition. However, over the next while or so I’ll be uploading it online to this website in a serial format–each month (my plan is) I will upload the next part of the novel for free online. As of now the first Day of Slubes (split into two parts) is available. I plan to do this with each novel–what I upload will be a sort of pre-final draft before getting it professionally edited. Along with this, I have another announcement…

Patreon

I have decided to get a Patreon account to go along with my writing and to help me out. Patreon is a website where fans of creators–authors, cartoonists, musicians, whatever–can become patrons and pledge money per month or per work. The idea is a little give and take: the creators make something and put it on the internet, the fans give them money, and then the creators make more stuff–patrons can get rewards for pledging, and milestone goals give them something to work towards.

In my case, it’s per chapter (or short story)–every time I post a part from a story, I’ll receive the money from my patrons. Since I’m trying to aim for a per-month basis, this would basically be per month, but as it’s per chapter it’s not set in stone.

Patrons can also receive rewards depending on amount given: $1 per chapter lets you see my Patreon activity stream (which I’ll use to post updates and secret information) and also gets you a coupon for the e-book of my latest novel (you’ll be put on a waiting list if you pledge before the second edition of Slubes is out); $5 gives you access to a live video stream I’ll do each month where I read from my novels and short stories–including the possibility of some I haven’t released yet–and take questions from people watching; $9 gets you a free signed physical copy of my latest novel (like the e-book one, you’ll be put on a list before Slubes is out); finally, there’s a $100 reward that I don’t expect anyone to go for. But hey, it’s there if you really like my writing and have extra money.

The milestone goals I have begin when I’m getting $50 per chapter, at which point I’ll give this site a bit of an overhaul with a WordPress premium account, letting me add custom fonts and colors and get a proper web address and remove ads; at $100 per chapter I’ll try to post a bonus chapter/short story each month without applying it to patrons’ pledges (so that you don’t suddenly give twice as much per month as before); after $250 per chapter I’ll begin writing a (planned monthly) comic where characters in the Cloudy Cuckoo Cosmos answer e-mails sent by real people on Earth, drawn by a talented artist (i.e. not me); finally (for now), at $500 per chapter I will consider everyone awesome, have to think of more milestone goals, and begin work planning an online Cloudy Cuckoo Cosmos text tabletop-type role-playing game, the details of which are long and complex, but more information will come up if we begin to near this goal.

The Future

As I said, I don’t have a projection for when Slubes Edition 2: Professional Editor Ahoy will be done, but at the beginning of each month I’ll be posting online (for free!!) here the next part of Slubes. The entirety of Day 1 (which was previously up as a free preview) is up now in two parts (as is the short story Tough as Blades), and at my projected schedule, Slubes will be all posted on here as of March 2015, so Darmenzi will begin being posted April 2015. It would be nice to have Slubes finished (for reals this time) by then, so I’ll go with by next March as my goal-date.

I think that’s everything that’s happening coming up. I’ll keep everyone posted on what’s going on. Seriously. Everyone. I will break into the homes of the entire world populace and leave letters on what I’m doing. I will then eat your milk and drink your cookies and fly off on a reindeer-powered chimney. HO-DE-DO, VERY IFFMAST!

Big Changes Coming Up!

So over the recent week I’ve decided to make some decisions. The worst one was saying “I’ve decided to make some decisions.” But for reals, I’m gonna be changing how I do things. I’m not going to go into too much detail right now because I have not even begun work on these changes.

I will note right now that my first novel, Slubes, will be removed from sale on Amazon at the end of the month. I’ll be looking into moving to a different self-publishing place (as you may know, Amazon.com isn’t exactly the most friendly and not-using-bullying-tactics-to-steal-a-deal-and-eat-its-competitors place), but it won’t be made available again immediately. Things will change. They’ll change in the physical form, on this blog, and in my wallet (though I am not yet sure in what direction that last one will be changing). Slubes will still be available on Smashwords, though, and there probably won’t be a break in availability on there.

I hope to be ready to explain further by the end of the month. I’ve got 18 days to prepare, and there’s quite a bit of preparing to do, so as usual, *sits down and plays video games for several hours*

I Thought I’d Forgotten Something in that Last Post…

It never fails: make a big post covering a lot of stuff and you’re bound to forget something!

The price cut for Slubes in December is over. The price has returned to normal, but a new normal. The paperback version is now permanently at $8.99, and the Smashwords e-book is at a mere 99 cents. Because I’m crazy. The Kindle version is still stuck at $2.99 because I can’t lower it anymore than that, so you’ve got to really love your Kindle to buy that one instead, I guess. Personally I have to suggest paperback just because it’s prettier.

Along with this, Slubes has had a tiny update. Like, six changes: two identical updates to my email, two punctuation changes, a word removal, and a word change. This is incredibly important!! It’s so important that it is version 1.1. One! Point!! One!

This will probably be a yearly thing, should I find other small things that could be fixed in the span of just a few minutes. Someday I may look back, see that I was a sucky writer years ago, and make a version 2.0, but for now that semicolon is enough to make things clearer.

Anyway I hope the fact that these are all super-minor changes means that my rushing through the process of making it again doesn’t mess anything up! TIME TO PLUNGE AHEAD!

(It may take some days for the updates to update.)

My first novel is now available for purchase!

My first novel, Slubes, is now available on the Createspace store!

https://www.createspace.com/4241840

I will make another post later today (Tuesday) after the ebook version is available on Amazon, and once more after the paperback is available on Amazon (which should be 2-5 days or something). (Edit: Apparently it’s already up! http://www.amazon.com/Slubes-Cloudy-Cuckoo-Cosmos-1/dp/1484155564/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1370324080&sr=1-1)

This is it, folks! I have crossed the threshold! I’ve jumped the gorge and am on the other side! I get to tell people that I wrote a novel, and that it has been published, no matter how self that may be!

It’s getting late–although not as late as late was last night, I have to say–and I want to be up at a decent time tomorrow–unlike today–so this is about all I will say on it now, but don’t forget I do still have a raffle going, so a couple free copies are still up for grabs! Later I will have a new character profile, and tonight at 18 Eastern Standard time I will have a stream where I’ll read from and talk of the novel.

Why, What is This?

June 4th: Novel Release. Aaaa.

WAIT WHAT yes, I’ve decided! The time is now… to say when the time will be! In one month, on the fourth of June…ly? No, just June, my novel, Slubes, will be made available through Createspace in both paperback and cheapo e-book format! Cheap for you, that is, not for me, well, I don’t particularly have to pay anything for either format, but the e-book will be cheaper in both cost and experience. At least, that’s how it seems to me, I’ven’t actually read an e-book before but the limited amount of control the author gets, um, I, am, getting off-track. Let me start over.

JUNE FOURTH

DUTH OLEC’S

SLUBES

FIRST BOOK OF THE NOTTLE CRYSTAL STORIES AND FIRST BOOK OF THE CLOUDY CUCKOO COSMOS SERIES

WILL BE RELEASED, LAUNCHED, MADE AVAILABLE, PUBLISHED, PURCHASABLE, AND MADE INTO A THING THAT IS REALLY REAL

HOLY CARP, AM I DOING THIS. And that wasn’t a question: I AM doing this! The next month is going to be filled with me being completely inept at promoting and advertising, but that doesn’t mean I won’t be trying! For more details, here’s my schedule for the upcoming month:

schedule

calendar stolen from timeandspace.cog

As you can see, I will begin promoting Slubes this coming week, however it may be that I will do that. I will probably really get into it once I have the completed cover for it, but the guy drawing it said it shouldn’t be too much longer. In the meantime I have a lot of self-congratulatory business to do.

The couple weeks after that will continue this, but I’ll also get some excerpts from the novel to post here. I’ll also have to test an old webcam we have, it’s probably about 8 years old and I have no idea if it even still works. The reasoning for this is I’ll probably have an online lunch I mean launch party when my book comes out. But first I have to make sure I have a working device to record me onto the streamernetiverse or whatever.

A week before the novel comes out I’ll probably start going more in-depth with the characters, and then June 4th will probably be the release party, again if I have a device capable of letting me do that.

All dates subject to me saying hex with it, more naps.
